very great article this is... digital kiosks are more convinient but what i reason is that, users of both services, i mean digital kiosks and netflix will always like some one to do it for them and pay a few bucks for service and delivery, since users are paying for netflix mailing the package to them, users already okay with digital kiosk, and i reason that users will also love to have their hard drive preloaded with movies then mailed to them or collected at the stop of the digital kiosk.

now that digital kiosks are having a web appearance, they will be on the pc screen of the users too. digital kiosks could be affiliates then... humn humn

It is worrying that people using these machines to steal but to be fair they are so poorly designed anyway that it is not surprising. So many times during the process you are required to get assistant. The message 'unexpected item in the begging area' shows every time they fail to register the products weight which is really annoying.

From the pictures the actual design has BORING written all over it, but that it will allow you to see what you can build and whats inside the box makes this a very well thought out concept, and its pleasing to see LEGO has finally got a kiosk project which is working for them, i had seen others back in Denmark which we never going to work.
Lego is a real good example of how a firm who was battling for existance for many years have recently managed to turn business models back into winning profits, they recently in 2008 had 38% percent sales increase in the US which is good.

According to a release on selfservice.org by the owners of Velib the project is being dismantled due to that too many bikes are going missing,damaged and the costs are spirralling out of control. So not sure how much success it is.
Its a nice idea, and i can certainly see the purpose of it, my wife and i were in Paris some weeks back and saw one of these bike stations with the machine standing next where you pay for your rental, the only problem is you have to a member, with a physical membership card and therefore for visitors it has no value as you cannot rent the bikes. which i felt was a shame.

Given that once little Sally has her ipod, she's still got to source and copy over tracks to her ipod before she can listen; not quite the 'quick-fix'.

Is there a vending or kiosk manufacturer/supplier offering track downloads and 'instant copy' to devices to ipods prior to vending them?

As a consumer, I'd want my new ipod to have something on it to listen to from the get-go.

I have been in so many similar situations like this. I think designers of self-service software have to do much more usability testing and also design for "self-service failure".

I read it here and there. From beginning till end and from end till beginning. And I really see only one conlcusion this DOES NOT differ from normal sales offer.
As i understand paperless coupon works like this you take product that has offer lets say 3 for price of 2 and pay it at checkout. Whereas normal discount you just take 3 for price of 2 and pay it at checkout. Difference you just think that on first option it could have been with coupon, but hey you just didnt have to use it.

Self-checkouts at grocery stores can be annoying, true, especially for produce. Check out how Fresh and Easy has arranged their checkouts - all produce is pre-bagged and coded to easily scan without looking it up on a guide. Also, employees stand at the end of the line and bag for you every time. They're also environmentally aware (a little too much as my argument with the anti-GMO employee shows) and would accommodate your bag preferences.

Check out www.MyFreePOS.net - they have a new product that:

1. Takes the order using touch screen picture menus
2. Processes the credit card
3. If card comes back approved, it fires the order to the kitchen for preparation.

It can run in standalone mode or be connected with their FreePOS touch screen system.

The kiosk was demonstrated to us embedded in a guest table with the idea being fewer waiters would be required.

It's supposed to be released pretty soon.

I work at a big-name supermarket chain, and we frequently joke that the POS system that we have in place for customers to self-scan their purchases does not really mean "point of sale," but rather, "piece of s**t." When customers go to ring in their produce, they are presented with little pictures of items with their PLU's listed underneath of them. What happens when there are five different pictures of "broccoli crowns" with all different PLU's? Well, this is why we've given them their nicknames.

I would say about 70% of customers require help when using the self-checkout, with the other 30% having required so much help in the past that we've prettty much already taught them everything we know.
